Someone emailed me and asked if I was a witch, and what is Wicca. Here's my reply:

I'll explain what Wicca is, then attempt to explain what I am - its a little more complicated than just being a witch :>

Wicca was developed in the forties and fifties in England Gerald Gardner, based on elements from (so he claimed) practices he had observed with New Forest witches and elements from Ceremonial Magic. The Witchcraft element has evolved over the centuries in Europe and basically involved a good understanding of herb lore and respect for Mother Earth. In opposition to the male-centric Judeo-Christian religions, Witchcraft (and Wicca) puts more emphasis on the feminine side. Depending on the tradition, the Goddess is either honored exclusively, or more frequently both the God and Goddess are honored equally. This concept of a dual godhead is ancient - at least as far back as the times of the Jews enslaved in Egypt. It wasn't until Christianity took root in Europe that the goddess was removed from the popular religion, although in Catholicism she survives in the form of the Virgin Mary. The overall goal of Wicca (and if anyone tells you different, they really don't get it) is to successfully Draw down the Moon. Drawing Down the Moon is a means of bringing the Godhead back into full awareness inside yourself, so that you remember who you - who all of us- truly are.

As for me, I am a Wiccan priest. However I am also a Christian Minister and a Ceremonial Magician. I also teach classes on 9th Wave Spiritualism. This is where it gets complicated, so I will try and explain as best I can. I'm afraid you will need to do a fair bit of research on your own for this to make sense. Christianity, Wicca, Judaism and Ceremonial Magic all have their roots in Ancient Egypt. At least that is the farthest back we can identify the connection.

The Egyptians had a very strong and well evolved spirituality. So did the Jews, although you rarely hear of it. The Jews had the Qabbalah and Jewish Mysticism. The Egyptians had Isis, Osiris and their whole pantheon of Gods. Both cultures understood that the different aspects of deity all ultimately resolved into one source and from this understanding arose a unified system of theology that was stronger than the some of its parts. Basically it goes like this:

In the beginning, there was not even nothing. Not zero, but Null. This was the Ain Soph Aur. Then from that came limitless nothing - the Ain Soph. And in that moment there was a flash of realization, and there was limitless light. And so began the World of Emanation. The Godhead suddenly existed. The Monad. And in order to experience itself it became two - The God and Goddess. And with the knowledge of each other they formed the Supernal Triad, And thus began the Creation. The creation led to the formation, wherein lay the distinctiveness of individuality. This is the realm of the Gods and Goddesses, or the Archangels and all that live beyond our plane. And it was from here that our plane was manifested.

So began the billions of years of expansion and evolution that finally led to a vessel for the Godhead to experience the Material world. Humanity. For in each of us lies the Divine Spirit - the Holy Ghost - The Higher Self. But our animal side makes us forget who we are. We forget we are divine, and so the world's religions and prayers and spells are our (often unconscious) attempt to reconnect with that.

The Wiccans draw down the moon, because the moon is the gateway to the ethereal - symbolically speaking. It is the closest object that is Not Us - not of this Earth.

The Ceremonial Magicians seek to rise up, recognising and stripping their animal impurities piece by piece, until they have complete control of the body, the will and the spirit.

To understand the Christian piece of this picture, its important to understand more than most people care to about the origins of Christianity. If you are a christian and firm believer in the New Testament, you may not want to read this next bit, although I assure you the evidence strongly supports it. Christianity is a created religion. It was created by Emperor Constantine and the Nicean conference in the 4th century. Pieced together from different religions, with conflicting works either heavily edited or thrown away, a final 'truth' was built from the ground up, and anything else was declared heretical.

However not all of the apocrypha was destroyed. Some books were buried or hidden, and passed down secretly. Others were uncovered this century, including the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Nag Hammadi. Many people alive in the 4th century knew who Jesus and Mary Magdalene really were, and they sought to keep that message alive. Jesus was of the Royal Line of David. He was the Sang Real (Royal Blood). And he and Mary (his wife, whom he married at Cana) were Isians - followers of Isis and Osiris with the knowledge of Solomon. It is clear that they knew, as did the followers of Isis and Jewish Mysticism before them, that we really truly are divine, and they tried to help us remember. So when Rome began its own controlling form of Christianity, there continued a different, hidden line connecting back to Mary Magdalene and her children, and beyond them, back to Egypt. The Knights Templar, the Rosicrucians and more recently the Golden Dawn were all followers and practitioners of this ancient system of reconnection. And so am I.

So am I a witch? I suppose so. But I'm also a Ceremonial Magician. And I walk the path that was once truly walked by Jesus, the traces of which were long since kicked over by the Church...
