Wake up, time to die.Wake up, time to die.

It seems pretty clear that in the next few days, two people will shuffle off this mortal coil, causing sadness in millions of people around the world. Their deaths will color the future.
One of these is Terri Schiavo, whom I personally believe will be better off, but I respect the beliefs of those that think otherwise, although I have no doubt they don't respect my belief.
Her death will not be the end of this whole strange and convoluted episode. Many people will see it as a failure of the US check and balance system of government, many others (many more others if the polls are accurate) will see it as a triumph.
Another issue to polarize a country that is already polarized politically.
The republican-heavy legislature is likely to move to get some kind of constitutional amendment to cover either how people like Terri are handled, or worse, to remove some of the consitutional power from the hands of the Judicial branch. In either case, it is strange behavior from the party that wants 'less government'.
The other person of note who probably won't be sending out Christmas cards this year is Pope John Paul II.
The moral compass for millions of catholics around the world is about to be sent away to a carrot farm in the country to live with lots of other bunnies. No wait, that was what happened to my pet rabbit.
The Holy See probably won't go live on a carrot farm, but he is likely to leave Rome quite soon.
Now the Catholic church has been on shaky ground recently and so the next appointment will need to be someone that can give their flock back some dignity and respect. It will also need to be someone who can move with the times.
Many people have suggested we may get our first black pope. Personally, I think it will be someone of latin extraction, but we'll see.
Either way, the events of the coming days (or at the outside weeks) are likely to bring people closer to their own mortality and spirituality than they are usually comfortable with.
elvisload wrote in a comment the other day to me that you live and you die, and that's it.
Perhaps.
But if that really is all there is to it, then there is all the more reason to make those things count.
How we live and how we die matters. It matters to our family and friends, sometimes to our enemies.
In the case of the two people mentioned above, it matters to humanity as a whole.
Catpewk, out.
