It has now been six days since I lowered my carbohydrate intake to around 20g per day. This is about 10% normal. I would have to say that there are some good things, bad things and myths associated with this.
  • I have lost 5 lbs. That may also be due to the 20 minutes of exercise I'm doing each day.
  • I am sleeping better, and for longer
  • My mood is, well, strange. The best way to describe it is to say that it is stable. Nothing upsets me, nothing excites me. I hate it (or would do if I wasn't sugar deprived) when I find another reasons to believe that the human condition is really just $2 worth of chemicals interacting in certain patterns. If sugar causes our emotions, then where is the soul in all this?
  • On the Atkins diet, you can NOT eat as much meat, cheese and egss as you want. You WILL get fat if you eat too many fatty foods. Eat your regular sized meals, just without carbs. And have a grapefruit or a small serving of All-Bran for breakfast.

  • I seem to have better focus when I want to work on things. I even got the latest interview done for the site. This one is with Christopher Penczak.

This whole experience is fascinating to me. Yesterday afternoon during training class, JR brought in cookies. I found there were 36g of carbs in them, so I had 1/4 of one cookie and gave the rest to Tim. For about 10 minutes I felt 'elevated'. Then my mood just drop back to normal. Or if not normal, whatever this thing is. I feel heavy in a way, as if gravity were higher than it should be.

For those who have never done the Atkins diet thing, it works like this. For the first two weeks, you go through 'Induction' where you have very little carbs. You must have some however or you will not lose weight, and you MUST take a multi-vitamin. The purpose of induction is to induce a change in your body chemistry that leads to lipolysis (burning fat for energy) and a secondary process known as ketosis.

During ketosis, the body switches from using glucose for energy (sufficient dietary carbs are not available) to using fat; fatty acids are then released into the bloodstream and converted into ketones. The ketones themselves are produced by the metabolism of fat. Ketosis refers to the process of the conversion. The ketones are used by your muscles, your brain, and other organs as an energy source. Excess ketones are then eliminated during urination. The results, if you're doing it right are:

  • Stabilization of your blood sugar.

  • Putting to an end various health Symptoms resulting from unstable blood sugar, such as fatigue.
  • Curbing your cravings.
  • Breaking food addictions.
  • A noticeable amount of weight loss.

Here's how the food pyramid looks during this time:

Why am I doing this? PAY ATTENTION!!! I am trying to join the Naval reserves, and have to get my waist size and weight down if I'm going to avoid getting thrown off the base the moment I report for duty.

As far as that whole process goes, I'm 'being processed'. We're waiting on bloodwork and urinanalysis, NSA background check, and various other things they do to determine whether you're going to be an asset to the team or a threat to National Security.

So that's where things are right now. I'll let you know how I get on with the diet and Reserves thing, I promise :) And send me some comments, or something, I need to feel the love out there - I need to know that someone at least is reading this drivel. Lie to me if you have to :>
