It helps a lot when reading this if you have seen both films...
In a time when England brings war to his land, a man decides not to fight. He is eventually driven to fighting by the death of a loved one during the occupation.
Despite the fact that many of his fellow citizens within the land share allegiance with England, what starts out as a skirmish quickly grows into something larger, and the aggressor soon finds himself facing unexpectedly well-led militia, that is aided by people from a country neighboring England.
To motivate them more, the King grants land to those who serve him.
The film's main french character starts out as Gibson's enemy, but by the end of the film they are very close.
The central character's reasons for fighting have changed. Now he sees the death of his loved one as a symptom of a larger problem, i.e. the tyrannical rule of the occupying force, and the Gibson character unites orindary people under a simple message. Freedom.
Some claim he is more than an ordinary man.
And in the end, he places his very life on the line to secure that goal for his people.
In one scene he makes a deal with the King's representative, but the deal is in fact a ruse.
Earlier in the film, another ruse occurs when Gibson and some of his followers dress in enemy uniforms to strike at the English.
There is a scene where Gibson uses a long pole to bring down a horse.
There is a scene where people are locked in a building and burned.
And another scene where a father and son talk while one of them lays dying.
Gibson's second in command makes a comment before a large battle about being well dressed for the fight.
One of his allies laughs a lot, and people think he might be a bit crazy, based on some of the things he says.
Also a scene where, with his body bleeding and broken, he looks off into the distance at what we assume represents a hopeful future as he is about to be decapitated.
And of course, he finds a love who has similarities to his dead wife.
In the last scene, we see his friends preparing to create the future he had hoped for.
So, which film is it?
