The original Star Trek was never supposed to become the phenomena that it did.
Neither was the original Star Wars.
Yet every decade since the 60s has seen Star Trek and Star Wars in the global consciousness.
Both franchises reached into our hearts and minds and culture and told stories that were partly science-fiction, and partly commentaries political fact.
These two franchises took us through space for five decades, finally returning to their origins to tell their respective stories of How It All Began.
This month, both stories were finally completed.
No more Star Wars.
No more Star Trek.
No more commentary on communism, racism, terrorism or facism.
In the end Star Trek left us with the formation of the United Federation of Planets.
I half expected Dean Stockwell to show up at the end and say 'Time to Go, Sam' as Sam Beckett (Scott Bakula)Quantum leaped out of Capt. Johnathan Archer.
Star Wars Episode 3 left us with a less hopeful view of the future, and a quote that is sure to generate some 'friction' between Washington and Hollywood:

"If you aren't for me, then you're my enemy"
"Only the Sith deal in such absolutes"

I know some of my readers will think this is a great comeback, and will wish that Tony Blair had said it a couple of years back to someone who will remain nameless.
Others will, I'm sure, have a different opinion.
As for the real world? The power of democracy is about to be tested this week as the Nuclear option is considered in the Senate.
Liberty may yet die with thunderous applause...
