Ten years ago, a comet broke up and slammed repeatedly into Jupiter. It was both wonderful and horrifying, and the interest it generated lead to a more rapid growth of a young technology that had only recently emerged into the public domain. I wrote this poem about it at the time, and came across it again the other day. So I'm reprinting it here, in honor of the tenth anniversary of that key event that sadly, only us geeks seem to remember today...

It began upon a quiet night, when Eugene held his 'scope aright, and turned to face his long time girl, and offered her a String of Pearls.
And as the months went rolling through, we heard it in the Weekly News, 'The End of the World is coming soon!' Hit Jove - then take a left at The Moon But in the Space between the Atoms, deep inside electron caverns, the CyberWorld began to watch, the Internet began to Rock
The news moved faster than a comet: 'Into Jupiter , there will plummet a String of Pearls called SL9, if your interested, get On-Line' And so we watched The Watchers come the newbies, scientists all as one The newsmen, pranksters, jokers too the dreamers, thinkers, me and you.
Typing, Reading, chatting, joking that Jupiter would soon be croaking. Another pile of stellar junk (Although that theory was really bunk) Excitement mounts and awe increases, As the first pearl smashed itself to pieces Making a plume so bright and fiery (The animations in the library!)
The comet fragments hit the Jovian. We got the gifs down through our Modems, and watched the Shoes and Levy smile with Heidi ( - her smile takes a while)
As the Jovian surface cratered the shuttle astronauts celebrated 25 years of courage and pride (then found out their newts had died) now we're at the tail end we've sent all the e-mail we had to send we seen the spots and felt the sorrow for SL9 , there's no tomorrow But now its over, we can wonder what purpose smashed the pearls asunder? With the news, the images, you can bet : It did wonders for the Internet!
Ok, if you started reading this before I finished formatting it, now go back and refresh the page :>
